Colourful celebrations at Blacon Adventure Playground

12 October 2018

There were colourful celebrations at Blacon Adventure Playground as older residents came together to enjoy Sanctuary Housing’s 10th annual Purple Day.

More than 80 people, many wearing striking purple attire, made their way to the playground, which is managed by Avenue Services, to enjoy socialising and a wide variety of activities and entertainment.

Purple Day is an annual celebration for older people, held to coincide with Older People’s Day and inspired by the well-known Jenny Joseph poem ‘Warning’, which opens with the line: ‘When I am an old woman I shall wear purple…’

Visitors enjoyed stalls, bingo, Zumba and live music, while another popular attraction was the adventure playground’s on-site farm, where residents met a variety of animals including donkeys, sheep and goats.

The activity centre at Blacon Adventure Playground received a £40,000 makeover earlier this year, with a new floor and toilets and fresh paint throughout.

It is available to hire for events including children’s parties, educational use and sports. Opening times are from 11am to 7pm during the week and between 10am and 6pm at weekends.

Paul Knight, Head of Avenue Services, said: “Blacon Adventure Playground is an important community facility and we were delighted to welcome residents to enjoy Purple Day, which is one of the highlights of the year for many older people in Chester.”

Maggi Dempsey, Sanctuary’s resident involvement officer, commented: “Purple Day is always a wonderful occasion and our 10th anniversary celebration was once again a truly inspirational event for all involved.

“We’d like to say a big thank you to all who attended, supported and helped organise the event.”
