Free creative writing workshops for beginners at Blacon Library

13 January 2020

Blacon Library is to run a six-week creative writing course for beginners starting this month, thanks to funding from Avenue Services.

The one and half hour weekly sessions will take place on Mondays from 27 January between 10am and 11.30am coinciding with Cheshire West and Chester Libraries Health and Wellbeing Week.

The workshops will focus on such areas as inspiration, setting the scene, plots and characterisation.  Participants will be encouraged to write their very own short story and there will be the chance to have their work showcased in the library and at a special story reading event.

The course is designed for adult beginners of any ability, although the organisers are particularly keen to work with older people and those who are isolated.  Places are available on a first come, first served basis and are limited to 15.

The course will be run by author Charles Lea, principal of literacy project company Read Now Write Now who has previously run two other courses with Cheshire West and Chester Libraries in 2017 and in 2019.

Council Leader and Cabinet Member for Wellbeing, Councillor Louise Gittins said: “We are delighted that Cheshire West and Chester’s libraries have been successful in obtaining funding from Avenue Services for this wonderful workshop.

“These workshops will inspire and empower people and hopefully participants will take away valuable skills to carry on writing independently.  I know people who have attended previous courses run by Charles have said how their confidence and wellbeing was boosted.”

Charles Lea added: “A lot of people have a story inside them, and this course is a gentle introduction into how to write that story.  Each week we will look at a different part of the writing process to guide writers along.  The course will be informal and there will chance for people to undertake fun exercises and discuss their writing within the group.”

The course will take place at: Blacon Library, The Parade Enterprise Centre, Blacon CH1 5HN from Monday 27 January, between 10am to 11.30am, for six weeks until 9 March (not including 17 February for half term).
