Thousands of children took part in a successful summer activity programme delivered by Avenue Services and a host of community partners in Blacon.

A packed schedule of events during the school holidays saw more than 8,000 youngsters take part in activities at Blacon Adventure Playground, as well as enjoying sport and fitness sessions with Rage Fitness Company, picnics at Blacon Children’s Centre and fishing sessions with Canal and River Trust.

The adventure playground also provided more than 3,900 free packed lunches for children, with a further 440 delivered by Holy Trinity Church at its weekly lunch events.

The summer programme was supported by funding from the Department for Education’s Holiday Activities and Food programme, distributed through community interest company Edsential.

Cheshire West and Chester Council, Blacon Beacon, Blacon Children’s Centre, Cheshire Police, Welcome Network and Blacon Butterflies WI were also involved in organising and delivering activities, while further support came from local councillors and volunteers, along with West Cheshire Foodbank, Aldi, Asda, Heron Foods, Spar and Morrisons.

Sandra Hewitt, Blacon Adventure Playground manager, said: “The summer programme has been a real success, thanks to the fantastic efforts of everyone involved and the support of the entire Blacon community. I’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has contributed.

“It’s been an extremely rewarding project to deliver and has made a real difference, with thousands of young people engaging in safe, outdoor activity and enjoying nutritious, healthy meals.”
