Children of Blacon enjoy successful summer programme

2 October 2026

Thousands of children and visitors enjoyed another summer of fun organised by Avenue Services and its community partners in Blacon.

A total of 18 unique events were held at Blacon Adventure Playground over the summer holidays, including a food festival, science days and late-night campfires. The on-site bike repair shop was also up and running, repairing a total of 60 bikes, while Rage Fitness delivered exercise classes to children.

Each year the Blacon summer programme is supported by funding from the Department of Education’s Holiday Activities and Food Programme, which is distributed locally through the community interest company Edsential.

The additional funding means that the programme is able to provide 2,000 free meals to children over the school holidays.

Over the six-week period, local residents also supported the summer programme with 120 volunteer hours.

Sandra Hewitt, Playground and Neighbourhood Manager at Avenue Services, said: “The summer programme was a great success again this year. A huge thank you to all our volunteers and partners whose hard work makes it all possible. It really is a community effort.”

Avenue Services, which is a not-for-profit organisation, is a joint venture between Sanctuary and Cheshire West and Chester Council.
